Organization:
The Department of Tourism is functioning with the avowed principles of achieving
the above objectives consistent with the existing global scenario as well as national
priorities and ethos.
Recognizing the importance of tourism and realizing its economic and social relevance,
the department plays a pivotal role in Tourism management and promotion in TamilNadu.
The Department has drawn up a strategy for the development of Tourism in the State
with the above objectives.
Functions:
1. The Government of Tamil Nadu is having its Tourist offices in all the importance
Tourist Centres including State capitals like Mumbai, Calcutta, Goa and New Delhi.
Besides, Tourist information Centres are functioning at Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram
and Bangalore and also at importance Railway junctions, Airports in TamilNadu for
the benefit of the traveling public. Through this information Centres, maps, brochures,
folders, posters and travel plans are being distributed for the benefit of the tourists.

1. Tourism has been declared as an Industry in TamilNadu. Ten
percent capital subsidies upto Rs.10 lakhs are given to Tourism projects in TamilNadu
with a capital investment not exceeding one crore rupees. Besides 15 percent of
capital cost up to Rs.5 lakhs as subsidy for the purchase of Generators.
2. To encourage private investment in tourism projects, the Department of Tourism
co-ordinates with different departments for early clearance of the projects.
3. Preparing plans to improve infrastructure facilities in Tourist Centres obtaining
central assistance through the State Government, and securing the active participation
of the local public by providing better economic avenues are the priorities of this
department.
4. The TamilNadu Tourism Development Corporation is operating 36 hotels and is providing
maximum comforts to the tourists at low tariff.
5. The TamilNadu Tourism Development Corporation is providing well planned travel
circuit plan with care and comfort to the tourists coming from other States and
abroad.
6. The Corporation is maintaining Youth Hostels, Children Parks, Boat Houses, Telescope
houses for the entertainments of the tourists.
7. Every year, Tourist and Industrial Fair is conducted at Island grounds at Chennai
for information dissemination on the achievements of the Government and to promote
Tourism.
8. The Director of Tourism, Chennai recommends for the sanction of FL 3 permits
to private Tourist Hotels and also recommends projects of the private tourism promoters
to obtain loan from the financial institutions.
9. Approvals of Shops and Classification of Hotels for awarding Star Category are
being certified by the Department.
10. Sound and Light Programme is conducted at Thirumalai Naickar Mahal. Efforts
are being taken to establish similar Programmes at Thanjavar Big Temple and at Fort
Saint George, Chennai.

Brochures and Publicity material printed by the Department about
the places of interest in the State are made available to the Tourists through
these regional out lets. This department participated in Travel Marts and
Publicity campaign organized abroad.
Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation Limited, Chennai:
Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation was incorporated during the
year 1971 with the blessings of Hon`ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. It made a
modest beginning with Five Tourist Bungalows and with two coaches. It has made rapid
strides since then, and today has earned the proud distinction of owning the largest
chain of Hotels in South India numbering 36. The bed strength has increased from
253 in 1971 to 2504 in 1998. 24 fleet of coaches are in use at present. Tamil Nadu
Tourism Development Corporation has established the following Tourist's amenities

Centre (Petrol Bunk)
The Youth Hostel has been established mainly with the object of
promoting low budget tourism wherein Dormitory Accommodation is provided to the
Tourists at a very nominal rate of Rs.50 per day. The Humbled Chief Minister of
TamilNadu has given a fillip to the promotion of domestic Tourism in Tamil Nadu
by exempting Luxury Taxes in Hotels up to the tariff limit of Rs.199. This has boosted
the Domestic Tourism significantly during the current year.
Transport Division:
1. Tamil Nadu Tourism Development corporation has earned the proud distinction
of being the only Corporation, to operate packages tours. Covering all the
States in Southern India, I.e., Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Pondicherry and
Goa. This has proved to be a major boost for the tourists arriving in Chennai from
North.
2. Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has been endeavoring to introduce
several new tours to meet the growing demands of the various tourists. TamilNadu
Tourism development Corporation has introduced the following new tours during 1997-98:-

(1) 8-days Andhra Tour covering all the major polaces in Andhrapradesh.

(2) 3-days Navagraha Tour covering the Temples of the Nine
Planets.

(3) 2-days Church Tour.
|
|
(4) 5-days chola Nadu Vynava Temples Tour Covering 21 Holy
Shrines in Chola Nadu (out of 108 Holy shrines)

(5) 1-Day Sakthi Tour covering major Amman Temples in and around chennai.

(6) 1-Day Triumal Darshan Tour covering 9 major Temples in
and around Chennai.

1. Apart from these tours Tours Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation is also
operating the regular tours like city Tour, Mammallapuram, Kancheepuram
Tour, Tirupathy Tour, 8-Day Tamil Nadu Tour , 7 days Goa-Mantralaya Tour, 14-days
Sunny South Tour etc Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation is also operating
Special package tour for the benefit of students community at confessional
tariff.
2. Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation is also organizing special package
tours at confessional tariff for the benefit of the Corporate Sector.
3. TamilNadu Tourism Development Corporation is operating special package tour
at confessional tariff for the benefit of Government employees availing LTC
facilities.

programmes for the benefit to Foreign group Tourists availing Tamil Nadu Tourism
