Visitors throng Summer Fair at Island Grounds



More than 50,000 people have so far visited the summer fair that was inaugurated by Chief Minister M.Karunanithi at island grounds on Friday. Around 20,000 people came to the fair on Saturday, while 30,000 visitors thronged the various stalls on Sunday. The waterfalls, based on the famous one at Courtallam, and a replica of the Taj Mahal on the banks of the Cooum river have become a hit among visitors.

The Chief Minister appreciated Ayyan Aruvi, an artificial waterfall that is bound to remind visitors of Courtallum. The Tourism Department has also created a replica of the Taj Mahal.

Over 1,500 people took bath in the 50-feet high waterfalls. Separate bathing facilities have been installed for men, women and families.

The response has been good though Rs.150 is charged for adults and Rs. 100 for Children to bath in the waterfalls. A statue of saint Tiruvalluvar is built in the middle of the waterfall. The fair also has 15 food stalls and 70 other stalls for shopping. The entry fee is Rs.20 for adults and Rs. 10 for Children. Tourism Secretary, Thiru. V.Irai Anbu said "This is the first time we are conducting a festival on such a large scale providing entertainment to people from all age groups".
