Chengalpattu [35kms] : A commercial and Tourist Hub on the Chennai South Trunk Road. It is the main junction enroute to all major towns in the South and North Tamilnadu. Surrounding villages are engaged in agriculture where rice and vegetables finds a prominent place. The southern end of the Kolavai Lake is a big water body and Boating experience is being provided by the TTDC, with mountains and lush green landscape in its back ground.

Vedanthangal :
It is a bird sanctuary in 75 acre area just 30 kms from Kancheepuram. Best time to visit this sanctuary is from November to March. During this time, birds are seen busy building and maintaining their nests. Migratory birds like Herons, Egrets, White Ibis, Spoonbills, Swans and Grey Wagtails visit and breed here during the season. Villagers near this sanctuary take care of their winged guests by keeping a vigil on the intruders.

Pandavadhootha Perumal Temple : It was built by Rajakesari Varman around 100 years ago and the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams. The temple of Lord Sri Krishna, called Pandava Dootha Perumal is one of the famous Vaishnavite temples in Big Kancheepuram. The temple is eulogised by Sri Bhoothathazar, Peyazhwar, Thirumazhisaiazhwar and Thirumangai Azhwar.
Ekambareswar KoilMuttukadu : It is an enjoyable backwaters and water sports zone with boating and water surfing experience, just 36 kms from the Chennai City. TTDC operates a Boating Centre in this ideal picnic destination with enticing green back ground and glittering blue sky and sea , with food court facility. Annual Windsurfing regatta is organized in the month of February.

Crocodile Bank : Rom and Zai Whitaker established the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust in 1976 with a specific goal of breeding the crocodile population of the Mugger (Crocodylus palustris), the Saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) and the rarest Gharials (Gavialis gangeticus). The Trust included turtles, lizards and snakes and extended the trust as the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Center for Herpetology in 2003.
Alamparai : It is 50 kms from Mamallapuram. There is a ruined fort that was built by the Nawabs of Carnatic. Backwaters and cool sands provide a nice picnic spot atmosphere.

Mudaliarkuppam : Also called as Rain Drop Boat house , maintained and operated by the TTDC, is 90 kms from the city of Chennai and 30 kms South of Mamallapuram on the East Coast Road. This boat house has varieties of boats, water scooters, speed boats to suit the taste of the visitors. Boating trip is also arranged to the nearest beach island in the Odiyur Lake.

Arignar Anna Zoological Park : The Work to establish the Zoological Park was started in 1976. It was opened to public in 1985. It is one of the largest zoological complex in South East Asia sprawling over an area of 602 ha. This houses 40 varieties of Mammals, 20 Avian species and 14 species of Reptiles. Animal welfare, Research, Veterinary, Horticulture and Sanitation teams, apart from maintaining Zoological Complex, conducts awareness campaigns for the School Children and Teachers as a part of its Education program. Seperate natural habitat enclosure has been created for the "BUTTERFILES" in an area of 2.7 acres, with 200 species of nectar plants at a cost of 4 Crores.


PILGRIM SPOTS

Thirumalaivaiyavur [47 kms] : It is on the way to Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary. This temple of Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple in Malaivaiyavoor, adding divine respect to it is called as Thirumalaivaiyavoor.

Kovalam : A seaside village, 40 kms from Chennai City is on the way to Mamallapuram. There is a Popular Church and a Dargah within the village boundary that attracts pilgrims from its neighborhood areas and Chennai too.
