Places of Interest Around Madurai

 srivilliputhurSrivilliputtur : It is a twin temple 80 Kms from Madurai. The first temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu worshipped as VADABADRA SAYANAR at Srivilliputhur. It occupies the foremost place in the 108 Divya Desams. PERIA AZHWAR consctructed the Tall Tower with the help of King Vallabadevan. The Chariot festivial of Srivilliputtur is a colourful festival attended by lakhs of pilgrims. The other enclosure is that of ANDAL, a devotee dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Majestic Temple tower finds a place in the Official Logo of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Srivilliputtur Palkhoa (Milk Khoa) is as famous as the Iruttukadai Tirunelveli Halwa.

 palani Palani : This is 120 Kms from Madurai and it is one of the Six Special abodes [arupadai veedu] of Lord Murugan. This is a famous pilgrim centre and the presiding deity of the temple is Lord Dhandayuthapani. Direct and frequent buses are available from Kodaikanal and Madurai to Palani. Panguni Uthiram [mar-Apr] and Aadi Krithigai [jul-Aug] are important festivals that attract thousands of Pilgrims. Different forms of Kavadi [ Bamboo Palanquins] are offered by the devotees as vowed by them.

Thiruparankundram : It is 8 kms from Madurai Junction. One of the Six Special Abodes of Lord Murugan dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya is located here. The Sanctum Sanctorum is carved out of a single rock and the temple is believed to be in existence for many centuries.
