lakeKodaikanal : It is 80 kms from Madurai located 7000ft above Sea Level on the Western Ghats. The visit of Dr. Robert Wight in 1836 and his observations about the Hill Station attracted Botanists to Kodaikanal. First two houses named Sunnyside and Shelton, on the South Lake Road, were built between 1844-1845 by American Missionaries. A Boat Club was set up in 1890 and Boating was introduced to public and tourists only in 1932. Brightly Illuminated 9 Km circular Cycle and Walkers path around the Lake is an added attraction now. The economy of Kodaikanal predominantly depends on tourism. Plans to Develop Kodaikanal started as early as 1875 when the Indian Railways extended the railway lines from Chennai to Tirunelveli and a train halting station was built at Ammaianayakkanur village named as Kodaikanal Road Station. The meadows, long stretch of forests, Woods slopes, mighty rocks, bowers, creeks and slopes charms the tourists. Kodaikanal is magical for its KURUNJI FLOWERS that blossoms once in TWELVE YEARS.

suruli Surili water Falls : It is 120 Kms from Madurai. It is a two stage Cascading Water Fall. The Suruli river originates from Meghamalai Mountain range which forms the source of water for this Water Fall. Suruli Water Fall drops from a height of 150 ft and gathers into a pool, flows a little distance and plummets from a height of 40 ft .

thekkadyPeriyar Wildlife Sanctuary : This is located 15 Kms from Madurai, at Thekkadi on the Kerala Zone. Visitors oriented and park centered community based ecotourism is the hallmark of Periyar Tiger Reserve. Spread over an area of 925 Sq. km, this sanctuary is one of the 27 Tiger Reserves of its kind in India. Repository of rare and endangered flora and fauna forms a major ridge between the Periyar and Pamba rivers. Prospect of spotting Elephant, Bisons, Sambhar and the Barking Deer in its natural habitat is a regular feature of this sanctuary.

Vaigai Dam : The Vaigai Dam is built across the Vaigai River near Andipatti about 70 kms from Madurai. Near the dam, The Government of Tamil Nadu has established an Agricultural Research Station for studies on various crops. Vaigai Dam was inaugurated on 21 January 1959 by then Tamil Nadu chief Minister K .Kamarajar.

Unjal Festival : It falls in the month of Aani [Jun-Jul] and culminates on the Full moon day of the month. Unjal in Tamil means a Swing, with a solid plank of wood connected to the Ceiling by Chains and it is made swing by gentle push forward and backward. Both Lord Sundereswara and Goddess Meenakshi will be seated on the Swing. Songs will be sung in praise of them along with Nadaswaram playing those songs while the swing is in motion. It is celebrated in the 100 pillared hall of the temple.
