Kodikarai or Point Calimere [112 kms] : This is a popular Migratory Birds Sanctuary. Water Birds, Fowls especially Flamingoes flock the sanctuary during the season. This is a paradise for the Bird watchers too. The Blackbucks and Wild Ponies too can be spotted in this area.

Nagapattinam [83 kms] : Has a population of 102,905 [ 2011 census]. The town came to prominence during the period of Cholas between 9th and 12th century and served as their important port for commerce and east-bound naval expedition. Kayarohanaswami Temple is the important Siva Temple in the town

Nagore [88 km] : This is the Dargah of Hazrat Meera Sultan Sayed Shahabdul Hameed popularly called as Hazrat Mian, who lived around 500 year ago. It is 4 Kms north of Nagapattinam Town. The tomb of Hazrat Mian is located here, a structure with a Golden Dome and five Minarets. The tank within the precincts called as peer kulam is believed to have curative powers and people of all faiths visit this Dargah for relief.

Thirubuvanam [45 kms] : It is on the Mayiladuthurai – Kumbakonam Road. Kampaheswarar Temple and Sarabeswarar Temple are the important temples of this town. It is also famous for its Silk Weaving Centers.

Velankanni [90 kms] : It is 12 kms from Nagapattinam. Most important Christian Pilgrim Center of the State. Pilgrims of all faiths and religion come to this church to get the blessings of Our Lady of Health. Velankanni is famous for its annual festival during August-September that attracts millions of pilgrim from all parts of India and world too. Devotes offer metal replica of the parts of the body cured by Lady of Health, answering their prayer. There is a Small Museum attached to the church which displays collection of the offerings made by the faithful devotees.

Sikkal [70 kms] : A temple dedicated to Sikal Singaravelar or Lord Subramanya is located here. Ten day festival is celebrated during October – November every year.


1.Suriyanar koil [Sun Temple] : This temple, believed to have been built by Chola King Kulothunga I, dedicated to Lord Suriyan [Sun] is 58 kms from Thanjavur. This is a Parihara Sthalam dedicated to Lord Suriyan [Sun] for Planetary Dosha relief.
