Introduction

Tiruvannamalai
It is 185 Km from the State Capital, Chennai. British called this as Trinomali or Trinomalee. It is at the foothill zone of Annamalaiyar Hill. The Identity of Tiruvannamalai revolves around the proud presence of the sacred shrine of Lord Arunachaleswara and Ashrams of Ramana Maharishi, Yogi Ramsuratkumar and Seshadrinatha Swamigal, known for eternal peace and divinity. Tirumalai or Arhasugiri is an ancient Jain temple complex, around 50km from Tirvannamalai, consists of three Jain caves, four Jain Temples and a 16 feet (4.9 m) high sculpture of Neminatha of the 12th century, the tallest Jain image in Tamil Nadu. The Sathanur Dam over the Thenpennai river located 20 km southwest of the town is a prominent picnic spot. Ulagalantha Perumal Temple at Tirukoyilur [35 Km] and Adhi Tiruvarangam[30 km] are the popular Vishnu temples near Tiruvannamalai. The temple town has a Population of 1,44,278 [ census 2011].

Annamalaiyar temple : This gigantic temple is located at the foot of the sacred Tiruvannamalai Hills. ArunachaleshwaraTempleIt is located in an area of 25 acres, with Nine lofty Towers, encompassed with several shrines, mandapams and other enclosures decorated with finely and aesthetically carved pillars and sculptures. Inscriptions on the walls of this temple date back to period between 10th and 16th century. The temple is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalams, means manifestation of five natural elements : land, water, air, sky or fire. Annamalaiyar is said to have manifested himself as an element of FIRE in this Temple. The myth goes like this: Arunachaleswara rose into a massive column of fire, whose crown and feet could not be traced either by Brahma or Vishnu, indicating God is an incarnation without beginning or an end.

The special days this temple town attracts millions of pilgrims are: Girivalam or Giri pradakshinam on the occasion of the full moon day every month, when lakhs of devotees circumabmbulates 14 Km foothill path around hill. The other festival is the Karthigai Deepam, celebrated on the full moon day in the Tamil month of KARTHIGAI [November and December]. Grand and Huge Deepam is lit atop the Annamalaiyar Hill is visible from several kilometer radius around the Hill. This festival records convergence of more than three million pilgrims in this town.

Ramana Ashram : Raman Maharishi, the 20th century saint lived here and taught simple Ramana Ashramway of life. This Ashram developed and maintained by Sri Ramana Maharishi’s disciples attracts tourists from all over the world. Sri Ramana Maharishi [1879 – 1950] is a 20th Century Saint. He was named as Venkatraman by his parents. Enlightened in the year 1986 at the age of 16, soon attracted devotees into his cult. His simple and effective meditation practices and divine sermons to understand humanity and divinity attracted devotees. They grew In numbers and strength as the days and years passed by and started addressing him as Maharishi. He attained mukthi in the year 1950. Kandashramam, where Ramana Maharishi meditated during his earlier days is on the Girivalam path.

Sathanur Dam
Sathanur Dam : It is located on the Pennar River, 35 Km from Tiruvannamalai. It is a quiet and beautiful location for tourists. Exotic landscape, Children Park with a mini-zoo and a Crocodile farm run by the State Forest Department are some added attraction to the Dam area for both Children and Elders as well.
